When Hot Pot With Friends Doesn't Ruin Your Blood Sugar (Yes, It's Possible)
Oct 07, 2025When Hot Pot With Friends Doesn't Ruin Your Blood Sugar (Yes, It's Possible)
Meet my MN girl gang 👆
Note: I am so proud of them - every one of these women has a service heart, intelligent mind, and intentional way of showing up as a true friend...
We went on an All-You-Can-Eat Hot Pot Adventure 🍲
The girlies agreed to do this with me (most for the first time), and it was AMAZING.
But here's the thing about hot pot when you have Type 1 Diabetes...
If you've never done it before, picture this:
- Ingredients come out at different times - you're guessing when to bolus
- You're cooking everything yourself at the table - timing is completely unpredictable
- Nutrition information is... not in existence - good luck finding carb counts
- Sometimes you can't fully get things out of the pot or they get eaten, so the 45 carbs you carefully accounted for is now maybe 34 and you're sitting there like "okay, what do I do now?" (Answer: order more 😂)
Oh, and you all have zero clue who put what in which pot at what time.
It's basically carb-counting & T1D chaos.
It can be really stressful. Nightmare-ish even.
OR...
You can feel really empowered walking into a situation like that.

THAT is my blood sugar from hot pot night.
Pretty solid, right?
Here's the thing I want you to know:
This is totally possible for you too.
Foods like hot pot, restaurants with mystery ingredients, social situations where timing is unpredictable...
- You CAN handle these without blood sugar going completely off the rails.
- You CAN feel confident instead of anxious.
- You CAN enjoy your life without the constant stress of "what if my blood sugar tanks/spikes/does something weird?"
Imagine This:
Walking into ANY food situation and feeling calm.
Feeling capable.
Feeling like you've got this. 💪
That's not some far-off dream—it's absolutely achievable.
And honestly? That feeling of confidence is what changes everything.
Speaking of Challenging Foods... Let's Talk About Ramen 🍜
Hot pot isn't the only "impossible" food that people with T1D stress about.
Ramen is another one that makes people nervous:
- High carb noodles
- Unclear portions
- Mysterious broth ingredients
- Toppings that vary wildly
But here's the truth: You can absolutely master ramen (and foods like it) with the right strategies.
That's why I created my FREE Ramen Bolusing Guide - a complete breakdown of how to handle ramen like a pro, including:
✅ Carb counting strategies for different ramen types
✅ Timing your bolus for optimal results
✅ How to handle the noodle + broth combo
✅ What to do about add-ons like eggs, meat, and veggies
✅ My personal ramen protocol that keeps me in range

If hot pot is possible, and ramen is possible, then literally ANY food is possible with the right approach.
